What does the brain have to do with menopause?
Perimenopause and menopause are neuroendocrine transitions, meaning the brain is changing in significant ways as our bodies stop producing estrogen and progesterone. This can be troubling because these changes cause a lot more than hot flashes (hot flashes are generated from the brain). More common symptoms of “estrogen deficiency” in the brain are
life-altering disruption of sleep quality, insomnia
cognitive changes including brain fog, forgetfulness, and poor verbal memory
onset or amplification of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions
intensification of ADHD traits and challenges
These changes can impact your ability to function in your job, disrupt important relationships, and wreak havoc on your self-confidence.
“I feel like I’m losing my mind!”
It’s common to hear women say things just like this, even fearing dementia. You might wonder if you have ADHD, or you may have been diagnosed before, but it’s become more challenging than ever to manage your life.
I assure you, you’re not losing your mind, but things really are changing. I have extensive knowledge of the neurobiological underpinnings of both menopause and ADHD, and I arm my clients with neuroscience, lifestyle and mindset changes, and extensive resources for the right nutrition and pharmaceutical supports that will allow you to live the next 30 to 50% of your life with the right resources, skills, and renewed confidence.
The Sandwich Generation
This is also a time of tremendous transition in other areas of life many women. You may still be raising or launching children while also taking on significant responsibilities for aging parents. Perhaps you’re also navigating career changes or divorce, further intensifying your symptoms.
