Investing in Your Own Self-care
Self-care has been on my mind a lot for the past couple of weeks. I'm seeing a weariness around me—in myself as well—that I think is the result of this health crisis continuing far beyond what we had hoped.
I'm also noticing how women are disproportionately affected by this crisis. I don’t mean financially—that’s been heavily researched and reported. I mean emotionally and physically. It’s an accepted fact that women tend to bear more of the burden of taking care of their family’s emotional and physical needs. I think now more than ever we need to be vigilant and intentional about our self-care. If you don’t have self-care established as a habit, now is the time.
I like to look at personal wellbeing as a bank account; In order to make withdrawals, there must also be deposits made. Developing the habit of making regular deposits is important to ensure we have reserves to draw from.
Optimally, we are dedicating time each day for eating well, exercise, relaxation, and pursuing our interests. Some days, that may mean taking just a few minutes to mindfully enjoy a cup of coffee. The most important thing is a commitment to daily practice.
