What’s Your Go-to Dopamine Generator?
Today is Pi Day, and Albert Einstein’s birthday, which seemed just perfect for the subject at hand.
"Eat dessert first, life is uncertain." I never understood why this saying tickled me so much until I realized that nothing gives me that sense that all is right with the world like eating a vanilla cupcake. I now know that consuming cupcakes (in the quantities I would prefer) has a net negative effect, so I've learned better ways to take care of myself.
One way to move past inaction on a task you’re struggling with is to first figure out what type of reward system works best for your ADHD brain. We’re often admonished to set up rewards for completing tasks, and that works for some ADHDers. But anecdotal evidence suggests others are more successful when they generate some feel-good neurotransmitters FIRST.
Here are some suggestions:
Exercise.
Spend 10 to 15 minutes in mindfulness or gratitude.
Work with a friend (body doubling).
Put on some music.
Break out your favorite essential oil.
Eat pie. Definitely eat pie.
