“Fixing” ADHD vs. Self-acceptance

The words “You don’t need to fix yourself because you’re not broken” overlays an image of a woman with both of her hands placed over her heart.

Sometimes I notice themes in conversations. This past week, a few people have asked me how they can fix themselves or overcome their ADHD and what they feel are their shortcomings because of it. To this I say, you don't need fixing, you're wonderful the way you are. Honest!

ADHD self-acceptance is a journey, and the subject requires more time and space than I can offer in a blog post, but here are some important things to consider.

  • ADHD traits are not moral failings.

  • Your brain is fine, it's even great in many ways, but it's different.

  • There is nothing wrong with having an ADHD brain and nervous system.

  • ADHD may not be a gift itself, but it does come with gifts. We see life and the world around us through a different lens.

  • We’re more optimistic, more flexible, more empathetic, we think and problem-solve quickly in a crisis, we see connections everywhere and are big-picture thinkers, and we’re often more creative.

  • Focus on your strengths instead of your weaknesses.

  • Knowledge is power. Learning the biological and neurological bases for ADHD traits will help you better manage life.

  • Life with ADHD has many challenges, and developing a set of tools to help better navigate it is a game changer.

  • An ADHD life coach can provide validation for your experience and the support you need to create success where you've been struggling.
